Newcastle United scouts were on hand to watch reported transfer target Dominik Szoboszlai put in a match-winning display at the weekend.

The Hungarian international was in action for RB Leipzig as they boosted their hopes of returning to the Champions League with a last-gasp 2-1 home win against Werder Bremen. The visitors took a surprise lead with 20 minutes remaining when Leonardo Bittencourt found the net but a last-minute equaliser from Willi Orban and Szoboszlai’s injury-time strike gave Leipzig a crucial three points.

Sky Germany have claimed United were represented in the stands at the Red Bull Arena and suggested the Magpies have now held ‘internal’ talks to add the attacking midfielder to their list of transfer targets as they look to boost Eddie Howe’s squad ahead of a return to European competition.

With just three games remaining in the season, United are firmly in the mix for a Champions League place and Szoboszlai has hinted qualifying for European football’s elite club competition could boost the Magpies chances of landing him during the summer transfer window.

Speaking to TAG24 after the game Szoboszlai said: “I’m definitely still with RB Leipzig for three games. I would like to play in the Champions League and would like to win my second trophy with RB Leipzig. We will see what happens after the summer.’

He then went on to correct a reporter who said he was staying with Leipzig, saying: “I didn’t say that

Newcastle would have to meet a release clause believed to be worth around £61m if they were to persuade Leipzig to allow Szoboszlai to depart this summer. The report from Sky Germany also reveals the Magpies have ‘cooled’ their interest in Szoboszlai’s team-mate Amadou Haidara after they were linked with the midfielder in recent weeks.
