Arnor Sigurdsson: Blackburn Rovers sign CSKA Moscow winger on one-year deal

Blackburn Rovers have signed Iceland international forward Arnor Sigurdsson on a one-year deal from Russian top flight club CSKA Moscow.

The 24-year-old was able to suspend his deal with CSKA under Fifa’s terms relating to the conflict in Ukraine, and signs subject to visa approval.

Sigurdsson spent last season on loan at Swedish side IFK Norrkoping, where he scored 15 goals in 26 games.

He also spent time at Venezia in Serie A during the 2021-22 season.

Rovers have now made three summer signings, with Plymouth Argyle striker Niall Ennis and Vitesse Arnhem midfielder Sondre Tronstad also arriving.

Boss delighted to land exciting Arnor!

Jon Dahl Tomasson admits it may take Arnor Sigurdsson time to adapt to English football, but believes the new Rovers recruit will provide a real threat for the team in the final third once he gets up and running.

The 24-year-old arrives with plenty of calibre having experienced Champions League football during his time with parent club CSKA Moscow, with Sigurdsson now ready to play football in the fifth country of his career.

An Iceland international with 27 caps to his name, the forward will provide both quality and versatility when he links up with the rest of the squad at the beginning of next month.

The talented attacker has enjoyed a two-season loan with Swedish side Norrkoping, where he scored 10 goals in 20 outings for Kamraterna.

“He can play on each side, he can play on the left, on the right, he can play as a number 10 and also as a false nine,” the boss explained when going into detail speaking to RoversTV about Sigurdsson’s qualities.

“We need goals and I hope he can help provide the goals, whether that be through assists or goals.

“We can use him in all attacking positions and he did well in the Swedish league.

“I understand that the Swedish league is not the Championship, but he’s also played well for the national team and played in Moscow before all the terrible things that have happened.

“The way Arnor plays, I think he can adapt, but he still needs to get used to a new league, just as all the new boys will have to, because the Championship is a very good league.

“Players need to get used to things and that’s normal.”
